Left to Right:  Alan Casline, Dale Hobson, Albert Glover, Paul Doty

   ST. LAWRENCE VALLEY POETS MEET

Meeting of the poets. I was thinking League of Nations. You know where you have to tell the secretary to tell the other's secretary, that yes, now--we will have Mr. (or Dr.) so-and-so read a poem. Not at all like that, thankfully. I know it is not polite but you have to be able to interrupt and joke, and point out the well known folly.
At Dale Hobson's office at North Country Public Radio, four poets met. The gathering suggested by Albert Glover and pulled together by Alan Casline. Paul Doty brought the added advantage of "less history" as represented by Glover, Hobson, and Casline. Each of them with more than thirty years in poetry and small press publishing. The resulting associations and their friendships have remained intact. The main idea behind the powwow was to do something together for the local poetry scene. Albert Glover mentioned the success of his River of Dreams Anthology and his interest in revising and updating it. Dale Hobson presented some ideas for graphing Place and Poetics that were so new that they are not being reported for fear of intellectual property thieves. Paul Doty offered his web-building, computer expertise for the unspecified future projects. My idea was a four-way editorship local web-based publication with a first issue to come out in two weeks.
There was a general feeling that any new web or e-mail based publication should be unique, with a reason to draw people's interest. Involving other local poets was seen as important.
The bulk of the meeting time was focused on sharing work in progress poems with interesting discussion of writing, audience, poetry readings, validation, and poetics. I got homework.
